Newfoundland’s indie-folk trio, The Once, has collected a trio of Canadian Folk Music Awards, numerous ECMA awards, and the title of Artist of the Year from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council. Originally known for haunting interpretations of traditional music, The Once is finding its own songwriting voice with the release of the 2016 EP, We Win Some We Lose. The group features Geraldine Hollett on lead vocals and Phil Churchill and Andrew Dale playing a variety of instruments and adding vocals, allowing for gorgeous three-part harmonies to rise above the instruments. They formed about ten years ago and found themselves on the Folk Harbour stage for the first time in 2008. When they announced they would make a CD when they had the funds to do so, a generous Folk Harbour audience member offered them money to record the album. Their resulting, self-titled CD was released in 2009 and was followed by offerings in 2011 (Row Upon Row of the People They Know) and 2014 (Departures), along with a Christmas recording released in 2012. The Once’s last Folk Harbour performance was in 2013.
