Stevens & McLain

Stevens & McLain

Biography

Mike Stevens and Raymond McLain are both esteemed and accomplished musicians. Hailing from Sarnia, ON, Mike Stevens was inspired by the sounds of blues coming from nearby Detroit. He began playing harmonica at age 12 and always explored the boundaries of this instrument. He created a place for the harmonica in bluegrass music with his explosive and expressive playing and is considered one of the great innovators in this genre. Raymond McLain is a virtuosic banjo player and respected educator – he is currently the Director of the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music at Morehead State University. For 21 years, Raymond toured extensively with The McLain Family Band, and he remains a bluegrass and old-time music festival favourite. Together, Mike and Raymond play a unique combination of musical styles reflecting their background in bluegrass, blues, and old-time country music. They previously played Folk Harbour in this duo format in 2008, 2010, and 2012, and it is a treat to have them return again this year.
