Robert & Bernice Jones

Biography

Robert Jones is a pastor, storyteller, teacher, and activist.  He is also a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, mandolin, harmonica, cane fife, and fiddle.  An award-winning educator, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of African American folk music, including blues, spirituals, and slave songs.  Bernice Jones is a gifted singer, teacher, and motivational speaker. Her voice is powerful and inspirational and has the ability to send shivers up the spines of listeners.  Robert and Bernice met at Detroit’s Sweet Kingdom Missionary Baptist Church, fell in love, and were married in 1986. Even though they both loved music, they didn’t combine musical forces until they performed together at a festival in 2004.  The connection between them was obvious and audiences loved seeing them on stage together – and the rest, as they say, is history. Robert and Bernice released their duo recording, Guitar Evangelists, in 2010.  Last year, Robert entertained Folk Harbour with his exceptional playing, singing, and sense of humour.  This year we warmly welcome him back, with his wife Bernice, for an uplifting dose of energetic and engaging gospel-blues.
