Pretty Archie

Biography

The Sydney, Cape Breton-based band, Pretty Archie, is made up of long-time friends Brian Cathcart (lead vocals and guitar), Matt McNeil (mandolin and guitar), Colin Gillis (harmonica, bass, and vocals), Redmond MacDougall (banjo, percussion, and vocals), and Scott MacLean (guitar and mandolin). Since they were always jamming together anyway, in 2012 they decided to form a band, which they named in honour of a local street musician. Their music showcases a genre-bending mixture of folk, bluegrass, country, rock, and vintage soul, making it difficult to neatly categorize the band’s sound. What is undeniably clear, however, is that Pretty Archie’s songs — steeped as they are in Maritime culture – contain universal themes of love, loss, and life that resonate with listeners everywhere. The band has released four full-length albums, including Hanging On, which dropped earlier this year. Pretty Archie is a group with an obvious passion for touring and a unique musical connection, traits that come through in their high-energy, foot-stomping, and hugely entertaining live performances. This is their first Folk Harbour appearance.
