Musicians often have varied backgrounds, but perhaps none so much as Lucy Kaplansky. How many musicians can say that their past includes waiting tables and tending bar as well as earning a PhD and working as a clinical psychologist? Lucy Kaplansky is all this and more. In her early days immersed in the New York music scene, she quickly became everyone’s favourite singing partner, due in part to her beautiful flair for harmony. She has provided background vocals for some of the biggest names in the folk world, including Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, and Nancy Griffith. She has also been part of musical partnerships such as Cry, Cry, Cry with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell, and Red Horse, with fellow 2018 Folk Harbour performers, John Gorka and Eliza Gilkyson. Obviously a gifted and coveted musical partner, Lucy is also a strong solo performer. Her 2012 recording, Reunion, celebrates Lucy’s pioneering immigrant grandmother and her journey from Poland to Toronto; the tracks on Reunion connect us to our common humanity through songs of family, origins, loss, and discovery. Lucy previously played Folk Harbour in 2016.
