Don Ross

Biography

Don Ross is a masterful fingerstyle guitarist. His discography goes back to 1989 with the release of Bearing Straight and includes 23 more recordings as a solo player or in duos or groups. Born in Montreal to a Mi’kmaq mother and a Scottish immigrant father, Don received a degree in music from York University. He has developed a distinct – and instantly recognizable – style that meshes percussive techniques, intricate finger picking, and uncommon ideas. Don has the distinction of being the only person ever to win the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship twice (1988 and 1996). Don first appeared at the Folk Harbour Festival in 1992 with The Harbord Trio. While he has appeared since at various Folk Harbour concerts (including at this year’s Folk Fiesta!), it has been far too long he has graced the Festival stage. According to Bruce Cockburn, “nobody does what Don Ross does with an acoustic guitar. He takes the corners so fast you think he’s going to roll, but he never loses control.” Be sure to buckle up when Don takes the stage!
