Còig

Còig

Biography

Còig is Nova Scotia’s Celtic supergroup. Composed of Darren McMullen (guitar, mandolin, mandola, banjo, bouzouki, whistles, flute, and vocals), Rachel Davis (fiddle, viola, and vocals), Jason Roach (piano), and Chrissy Crowley (fiddle), Còig’s driving tunes, haunting songs, and infectious energy make this band an unparalleled musical force. The members of the band are well respected players in the Celtic world, and each brings different influences to the group: Irish, jazz, world music, and of course, traditional Cape Breton sounds. Mixed together as only Còig can do, it results in the best of traditional music, presented in a non-traditional way. The quartet has released four recordings, including their 2014 debut, Five (winner of album of the year from Music NS, Canadian Folk Music Awards, and ECMAs) and 2017’s Rove (Juno-nominated and ECMA winner). Their 2019 offering, Ashlar, (a masonry term meaning “perfect fit”) features lively sets, tender traditional ballads, and fabulous covers. Yes, this is a band whose talents are fitting together very well, indeed. Còig performed at Festival in 2016 and appeared at this year’s Folk Fiesta!
