With his unique brand of radio-friendly and folky foot stompers, Sherman Downey has solidified himself not only as one of Newfoundland & Labrador’s most treasured artists, but also as a nationally revered and much sought-after songwriter. His songs have won over listeners from his homeland to the mainland and beyond, collecting a multitude of impressive accolades along the way. Sherman’s 2009 debut, Honey for Bees, earned him a Music NL Award and gained him worldwide attention. His follow-up release, 2013’s The Sun in Your Eyes (recorded with his band The Ambiguous Case) received prizes from Music NL, ECMAs, SOCAN, and saw Sherman winning the first-ever CBC Searchlight Prize. His latest release, New Beautiful (2020) offers insights into wandering far from home while longing to return. This album contains Sherman’s familiar character-driven songs that embrace his folk and country roots, sometimes delivered with simple instrumentation and sometimes with lush string and horn arrangements. In all cases, he creates an engaging journey for his listeners. Sherman previously performed at Folk Harbour’s Saturdays in the Park series in 2021.
