Mama’s Broke is a unique and powerful folk duo whose original compositions manage to simultaneously honour and defy tradition. Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler blend their voices to create haunting harmonies, and add fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, and traditional dance and foot percussion to round out their sound. The Halifax-based musicians have broad influences, drawing from old-time, Quebecois, blues, punk, Celtic, Balkan, and even doom metal styles, and they create a soundscape that is both familiar and new. Mama’s Broke formed in 2014 and has released two recordings to date: Count of the Wicked (2017) and Narrow Line (2022). Collectively, these recordings have earned the duo a Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year, an ECMA nomination in the Rising Star category, and a JUNO nomination for Traditional / Roots Album of the year. Mama’s Broke has previously performed in Folk Harbour’s summer series, and we welcome the duo to our Festival stage for the first time this year.
