This edition of Folk Lines looks ahead at some of the exceptional musicians that are scheduled to perform on our Folk Harbour stages in 2024, with emphasis on the spring concert series, Weekends at the Opera House.

Weekends at the Opera House, Spring 2024

There is an incredible lineup of musicians in place for the spring.

● All shows take place at the Lunenburg Opera House, 290 Lincoln St., Lunenburg

● Doors open at 6:45 pm, shows start at 7:30 pm

● Seating is general admission

● Ticket prices include taxes

● All ticket sales are final

Opening concert: March 22: Allison Russell with special guest Aysanabee

Allison Russell —poet, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, activist, and co-founder of Our Native Daughters and Birds of Chicago —embarks upon her next chapter in The Returner, a body-shaking, mind-expanding, soulful expression of Black liberation, Black love, and Black self-respect. Allison has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards, including four in 2024 for her Returner album.

Aysanabee is a JUNO-nominated multi-instrumentalist, producer, and singer-songwriter currently based in Toronto. He is Oji-Cree, Sucker Clan of the Sandy Lake First Nation, a remote fly-in community in the far reaches of Northwestern Ontario.

Weekend #2—J.P. Cormier (Friday, April 5) and “Small of My Heart” Songwriters’ Circle (Saturday, April 6)

J.P. Cormier is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, a talented singer-songwriter, an acclaimed musician, and a supreme entertainer. JP Cormier has played many Folk Harbour stages over the years and always dazzles and delights audiences.

Tickets: $35 ($17.50 for those 25 years and under)

“Small of My Heart” Songwriters’ Circle features four amazingly talented singer-songwriters who have all previously appeared separately on Folk Harbour stages. For this concert, they will be on stage together in a songwriters’ circle. A rare treat awaits as Catherine MacLellanErin CosteloLisa MacIsaac, and Kristen Martell share the Lunenburg Opera House stage.

Weekend #3—Quote the Raven (Friday, April 19) and The Once (Saturday, April 20)

Jordan Coaker and Kirsten Rodden-Clarke are Quote the Raven, a folk-pop-roots duo from NL. Quote the Raven performed at the Folk Harbour Festival in 2019 and 2022 and in our Saturdays in the Park series in 2021, always showcasing their smooth vocal harmonies and delightful stage presence.

Newfoundland has a storied history of stunning songwriters, poets, and players. Over the course of the last decade, The Once has become an important part of that history. Group members Geraldine Hollett, Phil Churchill, and Andrew Dale blend their voices into soaring three-part harmonies.

Weekend #4—Dave Gunning with Jud Gunning (Friday, May 10) and Kellie Loder (Saturday, May 11)

Dave Gunning is an award-winning singer-songwriter and a captivating performer. A masterful storyteller, Dave has a knack for connecting with audiences. Dave is a frequent performer on Folk Harbour stages. A familiar name will open this concert. Jud Gunning is Dave’s son and a gifted musician in his own right. Jud was part of Folk Harbour’s 2023 Songwriters’ Camp and appeared at last year’s Folk Harbour Festival.

Kellie Loder is a passionate storyteller and accomplished songwriter with a voice that conveys warmth and power. Possessing a unique ability to work a room effortlessly, they will have you crying, laughing and everything in between. Kellie has made several Folk Harbour appearances in recent years on their way to becoming a fan favourite.

Weekend #5—Gina Burgess (Friday, May 24) and Carleton Stone (Saturday, May 25)

Internationally recognized artist Gina Burgess is a multi-genre violinist, composer, educator, and musician wellness facilitator. Gina was a member of the Iqaluit- based band The Jerry Cans (who appeared at our 2019 Festival) and the jazz group Gypsophilia (who brought their high-energy show to the 2014 Festival).

Carleton Stone is an award-winning artist, a songwriter with a growing list of credits, and a founding member of the hugely successful trio, Port Cities. From November to December, 2023, Carleton completed an extensive 23-concert tour with the Crash Test Dummies.

Festival 2024: Passes are on sale now!

The 39th annual Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival will take place from August 8 to 11, 2024.

Early Bird passes are on sale now for $160 ($80 for those 25 years and under) including all taxes. This price will be in effect until April 15, 2024, but note that this year, there will be a limited number of Early Bird passes available. Buy early to avoid disappointment.

Passes can be purchased online, by phone through Ticketpro (1-888-311-9090), or through the Folk Harbour office (902 634-3180, 125 Montague St., Lunenburg). From April 16, 2024 and after, full Festival passes will cost $190 (including taxes).

The 2024 Festival lineup will be announced during our spring Weekends at the Opera House series.
