VOLUME 21 #12
This edition of Folk Lines takes the curtain down on the Folk Harbour Society’s successful year of presentations, and looks ahead to exciting musical offerings in the new year. We also provide ideas for giving the gift of music!

Weekends at the Opera House: Fall 2023

This series finished off with two Christmas concerts that put those in attendance into the holiday spirit. Below are photos from Reeny Smith’s Family Christmas (Left) and Lennie Gallant and the Innkeepers Christmas (Right). Thanks to Kerry Jarvis for these photos.

Weekends at the Opera House, Spring 2024

There is an incredible lineup of musicians in place for the spring. There will be 9 concerts taking place between March 22 and May 25. Details will be announced when we have contracts finalized.

The series begins with Allison Russell on March 22. Allison will be in Nova Scotia for the JUNOS and the Lunenburg Opera House is one of two concerts in the province as part of Allison’s “The Returner Tour”. Opening for Allison will be Aysanabee.

Allison Russell —poet, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, activist, and co-founder of Our Native Daughters and Birds of Chicago —embarks upon her next chapter in The Returner, a body-shaking, mind-expanding, soulful expression of Black liberation, Black love, of Black self-respect.

Aysanabee is a JUNO-nominated multi-instrumentalist, producer, and singer-songwriter currently based in Toronto. He is Oji-Cree, Sucker Clan of the Sandy Lake First Nation, a remote fly-in community in the far reaches of Northwestern Ontario.

Tickets are $55 ($27.50 for those 25 years and under) including taxes and are available here. Note that these tickets are selling quickly!

At this point we can also announce two favourite acts from Newfoundland and Labrador: The Once on Saturday, April 20 and Kellie Loder on Saturday, May 11.

Tickets for both these concerts are $35 ($17.50 for those 25 years and under).

‘Tis the season to donate

Those who are in a position to make financial donations at this time of year will be looking for worthy causes. The Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society is a registered charitable organization and we can issue receipts for tax purposes. Ticket sales account for only about one-third of the costs of our presentations. In order to keep live music generally accessible, we rely on grants and donations.

Donations can be made through our Canada Helps page or through the Folk Harbour office: 125 Montague St., Lunenburg, NS, B0J 2C0, (902) 634-3180.

Donations of any amount are deeply appreciated.

A seasonal playlist of Folk Harbour favourites

Folk Harbour’s multi-talented Administrative Services Coordinator, Angela Churchill, has created a playlist, “Folk Harbour Holidays 2023” that is filled with seasonal offerings from some Folk Harbour favourite artists. Check it out on Spotify here.

We will end this edition of Folk Lines with a link to a video that is becoming a seasonal classic: Lennie Gallant’s “Christmas Day on Planet Earth”. With Lennie’s skills as a songwriter and beautiful backing vocals from the Zimbabwean band, Black Umfolosi, this is a powerful song that is a reminder of what the season should be about.

All of us at the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Society extend warm wishes to readers of Folk Lines. Happy holidays!!
