Nadia and Jason Burnstick appeared at the 2023 Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival and were such a hit that they were invited for a return engagement. The husband and wife duo met over a decade ago, with music always at the heart of their kinship, so it’s no surprise that their songs are timeless and incomparable. Nadia is a Francophone-Métis singer-songwriter, and Jason is a Plains-Cree guitarist. With voices and languages that blend together with ease, Burnstick’s signature sound is driven by Jason’s proficient playing of 100-year-old Weissenborn lap slide guitars, which resonates beautifully with Nadia’s rich and striking vocals. Together, Burnstick pushes the boundaries of contemporary folk music. It’s hard to deny the magic they create as they command the stage with their palpable performances and harmony-laced songs. In 2019, Nadia and Jason released their JUNO-nominated debut album, Kîyânaw (Cree: Us), from which their song, “Some Kind of Hell” took home the Canadian Folk Music Award for Single of the Year. Nadia and Jason are set to release their sophomore recording this year.
